The founder of School of Affluence, a social media influencer named Anna Bey, has garnered a lot of attention with her latest YouTube video on being an ‘elegant lady’ while at a restaurant.
Bey, who has a diploma in International Etiquette and Protocol, explained the 10 mistakes she thinks women make when eating out.
The 32-year-old, who lives in London said she’d seen so many ‘affluent’ women making faux pas at dining tables and encouraged her followers not to be “one of those” people.
She said: “In this video you will find out exactly which etiquette mistakes you shouldn’t be doing.
“Today we are going to talk about those important don’ts, of what not to do at the dining table when you are, let’s say, having lunch or dinner.”
Her first top tip is to ensure you never put your wine glass in the wrong place after taking a sip.
She explains how if you have a glass of water, the wine should never go to the left of it, but always to the right.
“When you have a goblet as a water glass this is the correct position.”
She continues to say that an elegant lady should never hold their wine glass by the bowl, but always by the stem.
And when it comes to your water, if you are going to refill your own glass, always be sure to refill your table partner’s glass first, then do your own.
Another piece of advice was to avoid cutting the leaves in a salad – instead the leaves should be eaten whole.
Bey also told viewers they should never eat bread at a restaurant like a sandwich.
Instead of smothering a slice in butter or pate and then biting straight into it, the expert says you should break it up into small bite-sized pieces, then apply a small amount of your topping.
Her sixth tip is all about a cutlery position she calls the ‘robocop’ – something you shouldn’t do.
The robocop occurs when you place your knife and fork down, so they are resting on the edge of the plate, straight out either side.
“We do not rest our cutlery like this when we are taking a break from eating,” she says.
Instead the knife and fork should be placed in/on the plate/bowl like an “inverted ‘v’.”
Similarly she explains that when in your hand, the knife must always point inward, never outward, as anything else is not appropriate.
Other mistakes to avoid, include applying make-up while at the table, resting your elbow on the table and blowing your nose in public – instead, she advises going to the bathroom for this, or dabbing quickly with a tissue if it’s an emergency.
Finally, she adds that an elegant lady should never finish their meal by putting their napkin on their plate.
“You just never do that. In most formal etiquette, the napkin is placed on the left side.”
Bey’s video has gone viral, being watched more than 190,000 times, with many people commenting to share their thoughts on her tips.
Most people seemed impressed by them, with one saying: “I was doing five things wrong on that list. You’re saving feminine lives Anna.”
Another wrote: “I wish I had known about the bread! It’s actually so much easier to eat it the ‘elegant’ way, than trying to maneuver a big chunk of bread.”
A third added: “I love your tips! Thanks for sharing with us!”
