A woman who slammed her husband for making a “sexist” remark to their young son has been told she did the right thing in a bid to stop her child learning “casual sexism”.
The mum says that when their child was throwing a tantrum one morning her husband had warned him to “stop screaming like a girl”.
She says she took offence to the remark and asked him not to talk about girls negatively in the future, but he argued it was not offensive to say “because girls scream more than boys”.
The mum explains: “I said four-year-old boys scream just as much/loudly as girls. He said well they shouldn’t. I said that’s archaic and sexist.
“What started out as a small argument has snowballed into a big fight, we hardly spoke the whole day and he has just told me I was rude and condescending to him this morning for calling him sexist and he expects an apology.
“I don’t feel I was out of line and I still think what he said is offensive to girls but he does not agree.”
Others slammed the dad for his comment and his defence of it, with one writing: “This is the same as someone who says their boy needs to ‘man up’. It IS sexist and promotes toxic masculinity, negative stereotypes and a skewed view of girls/women.
“It’s a shame he can’t see he is in the wrong. I am sure he doesn’t consider himself sexist but he obviously still has some deep-seated views of appropriate male/female behaviour.”
A second said: “Not only is your husband sexist, he demonstrates a p*** poor understanding of child development. Little boys have the same feelings as little girls, with the same intensity.
“It’s people like him who socialize them to stuff, and they grow into men with zero understanding of themselves and their emotions and then project that toxicity onto people around them.
“These types of men learned that the only ‘acceptable’ feeling to display is anger, because anger is ‘manly’ and never got them shamed.”
A third replied: “That is sexist. Children learn casual sexism through comments like these.”
Another simply added: “Toddlers scream. Your son was screaming like a 4 year old.”
