When it comes to breastfeeding, many people still have issues with it or try and turn it into something sexual, despite it being one of the most natural parts of life.
This is evident from a recent post on Reddit’s Am I The A**hole forum, in which a man reveals an issue his family have recently had with breastfeeding.
The unnamed father explains how his parents recently dropped by his house unannounced and walked in on his wife in the middle of breastfeeding their son.
His father then made two inappropriate comments about the woman’s breasts, leaving her feeling upset and incredibly uncomfortable in her own home.
Writing on Reddit, the man said: “On Friday night my parents dropped by our house on short notice. We weren’t really prepared for them but we let them in any way.
“My wife was sitting in a chair in our living room breastfeeding our son when my dad walked in. He did not see anything other than my wife’s boob (not nipple), but based on that he decided he had to comment so he told her that he could see why his grandson was so well fed.
“Then when my mom walked in he told her something like ‘we don’t have to worry about John starving by the looks of it’.
“My wife is very insecure about her body post-baby, so she was very upset and in tears.”
The man goes on to say that he insisted his father apologise to his wife, which he did and the wife accepted it.
However, a few days later the man found out that his wife had sent her father-in-law a message behind his back, “raking him over the coals for what he said and telling him he was a pervert, disgusting and she didn’t want him in her home again for a long time”.
He adds that he agrees his dad was an “a**hole” for his comments, but thinks his wife was in the wrong for bringing it up again after he had already said sorry.
Hundreds of people replied to the post, with many taking the wife’s side and being horrified by the father-in-law’s words.
One person said: “Tbh I’m on your wife’s side. Comments like those from men make women feel extremely vulnerable and uncomfortable. We deal with that on a daily basis, and to have that happen to you in your own home is horrible. What your dad did is sexual harassment and something he could get fired over if it happened in the office.
“He sexualized your wife while she was feeding your child. Read that again.
“Doesn’t matter if he apologised, your wife does NOT feel safe around him right now and you 100% need to respect that. If my FIL said that to me I wouldn’t want him around me either and wouldn’t trust or feel comfortable with him probably ever again honestly. What he did was shameful and your wife has every right to set boundaries. You need to be on her side.”
A second replied: “My jaw actually dropped when I heard what he said. What a disgusting thing to say. Absolutely sexual harassment.”
“I was expecting it to be some stupid comment about how she should cover-up, which is ridiculous too, but his comments were disgusting. The wife should never feel uncomfortable in her own home,” posted a third.
Someone else branded the father-in-law’s comments “gross” and urged the husband not to “normalise” that kind of behaviour.
